IMEI Registration
There are a lot of illegal telecommunication in Indonesia. To reduce this, the government established a program called International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). IMEI Registration is an important process in order for you to be able to use Indonesian sim card on electronics that are purchased internationally.
If you do not want to do IMEI registration there are 2 options for you:
- Using an overseas sim card with international roaming services.
- Buying a smartphone from an authorized dealer in Indonesia. This will automatically get registered.
IMEI Registration for short stay
If you are staying less than 90 days (3 months), you can do IMEI registration at any official office of your chosen mobile operator. To register you need to come to their official office in person and bring your valid passport as well as the phone you would like to register.
Staying less than 90 days will get you a privilege, free of tax and can be extended for another 3 months, without any additional fees. But remember you will need to extend it at the same official office of your chosen mobile operator.
IMEI Registration for long stay
If you are planning to stay more than 90 days, you will have to register your phone. You can do IMEI registration at Jakarta or Bali airport. IMEI registration must be done within 5 days after your arrival.
IMEI Registration Tax Fee
e.g. Your phone cost USD 900, then the tax will be applied to the exceeding rate.
(price of your phone – exceeding rate) x 40%
(900 USD – 500 USD ) x 40%
400 USD x 40%
= 160 USD
If you do not do IMEI registration process within 5 days of your arrival, the tax will be charged the same cost of your phone. Keep in mind that IMEI registration should be registered within 90 days from the date of your arrival in Indonesia.
Phone Registration Process
You must register your phone in advance at the government’s official website here. Each person is allowed to register 2 phone, and if the overall cost exceeds $500 you will need to pay the tax.
After the registration is completed, you will then receive a QR code. You will need to print out or screenshot in order to register your phone at customs.
How to register IMEI in Jakarta?
You are able to register your phone at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport departure hall. The IMEI registration office is located in Terminal 3 on the second floor (proceed to the end of the hall and then turn left). There will be a Customs Office behind the check-in Desk A.
Make sure you have enough time to register your phone because there may be a queue. It will also takes the customs officer time to ask you a few questions regarding your phone.
How to register IMEI in Bali?
You can register your phone at Taxes and Duties (Kementerian Keuangan Direktorat Jendral Bea dan Cukai) office in Bali. All you need to prepare is your ticket to Indonesia (boarding pass) and QR code.
